Course Highlights
This 2-day course will cover the essentials on how to design Software Defined Radio applications using the Signal Processing and System Generator Blocksets within Simulink. Topics such as building a basic model, buffering, vector operations, and sampling will be introduced in this section. A discussion on the capabilities of the blockset to perform spectral estimation and filter implementation will then follow. Finally, the application of Software Defined Radio will be elaborated in details from theory to implementation into a target hardware board.
Prerequisites
The participants are expected know the following prior to taking this course:
- to have exposure to signal processing and communications techniques
- to know the fundamentals of MATLAB or SIMULINK
Course Outline
Software Defined Radio (SDR)
Objective: to implement software defined radio application using DSP/FPGA. The students will go through design specification and process from the theory of SDR algorithm, simulation, and hardware implementation.
Selection of basic design topology
- Understanding the theory of SDR
- Proving the theory by simulating the mathematical model using Simulink
Design multirate digital filter
- For transmitter: Digital Up Converter (CIC Interpolation filter, FIR Interpolation filter)
- For receiver: Digital Down Converter (CIC decimation filter, FIR decimation filter)
Create hardware independent model
- Creating hardware independent model based on basic topology which has been tested before and tune the model by using existing hardware specification
Partition design
- FPGA for RF processing
• Frequency translation
• Filtering
• Sample rate conversion
- TI DSP for Audio Processing
• Modulation
• DemodulationImplement the design on target hardware
